Dasuan (大蒜) — Garlic in traditional Chinese medicine

Garlic (Da Suan — 大蒜) is one of the oldest documented remedies in the history of medicine, mentioned in the classical Chinese texts "Bencao Gangmu" (Materia Medica) and in Egyptian papyri from 3,500 years ago. In TCM, garlic is classified with a "pungent–warm" tone, entering the meridians of the Spleen, Stomach and Lungs — the organs of digestion, immunity and respiration.

Tone "pungent-warm"

Garlic disperses internal cold, activates the circulation of Qi and eliminates stagnation — the basis of its antimicrobial and cardiovascular effects in the TCM perspective.

Supporting detoxification function and elimination of parasites

In the classical texts: "Da Suan kills toxins, eliminates pathogenic dampness, disperses accumulations and restores clarity to the intestines." Traditionally used for intestinal infections, parasites and digestive stagnation.

Tonifying the Spleen and Stomach

The warm properties of garlic tonify the Yang of the Spleen, stimulating digestion, metabolism and the transformation of nutrients into Qi.

Opening the Lungs

Garlic "opens the Lungs" and eliminates phlegm — explaining its traditional use for respiratory conditions, bronchitis and cough.

Activating blood circulation

The pungent properties mobilize stagnant blood and support peripheral circulation — the traditional mechanism behind the modern cardiovascular benefits confirmed by modern studies.

Health benefits

Garlic essential oil contains allicin — one of the most studied bioactive compounds in the plant kingdom — alongside diallyl disulfides (DADS), diallyl trisulfides (DATS), ajoene, vinyldithiines, and other organosulfur compounds. These compounds act synergistically on multiple systems of the body.

Heart health, circulation and cholesterol

Supports heart health

Garlic helps maintain heart health through its action on LDL cholesterol. It also helps inhibit platelet aggregation, improves vascular elasticity and can reduce arterial stiffness. Additionally, garlic contributes to normal homocysteine levels — an amino acid associated, at high values, with increased cardiovascular risk.

Normal cholesterol and lipid levels

Garlic contributes to normal cholesterol and blood lipid levels. Allicin inhibits the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase — involved in endogenous cholesterol synthesis, contributing to a balanced lipid profile.

Comfort in the case of the sensation of heavy legs

Garlic also helps with comfort in the case of "heavy legs" — a symptom of poor venous circulation. By improving peripheral microcirculation and reducing vascular inflammation, it contributes to alleviating the sensation of heaviness, fatigue and tension in the lower limbs.

Vascular health and microcirculation

Garlic contributes to vascular health for good blood circulation through microvessels. Ajoene and diallyl disulfides can reduce blood viscosity and inhibit platelet aggregation, improving blood flow at the level of capillaries and peripheral microcirculation. Additionally, studies have demonstrated that allicin from garlic has vasodilatory properties and can reduce systolic and diastolic blood pressure through inhibition of the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and through stimulation of nitric oxide production — which produces relaxation of vascular muscles.

Antimicrobial, antiparasitic and microbial balance

Effect against harmful bacteria

Garlic has an effect against harmful bacteria. Allicin is one of the most potent active compounds with known antibiotic properties, useful even against Streptococcus.

Microbial balance in the gut

Garlic helps maintain microbial balance in the gut and defense against harmful microorganisms. Allicin acts selectively — it eliminates pathogenic bacteria without destroying the beneficial intestinal flora (Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium).

Natural antifungal activity

The organosulfur compounds in garlic oil have documented antifungal activity against Candida albicans and other pathogenic fungal species, useful in supporting the treatment of recurring intestinal or systemic fungal infections.

Antiviral protection

Allicin and ajoene can inhibit the replication of common viruses by interfering with essential viral enzymes and by increasing the activity of NK (natural killer) cells. Regular garlic consumers have a lower frequency and shorter duration of seasonal viral infections.

Immunity and natural defense

Contribution to normal immune function

Garlic contributes to normal immune function by stimulating the production of NK cells, T lymphocytes and macrophages. Clinical studies show that garlic extract supplementation reduces the frequency of common colds and shortens their duration.

Antioxidant properties — natural source

Garlic contains antioxidants and is a natural source of antioxidants, helping the body's antioxidant capacity. The organosulfur compounds neutralize free radicals and increase the activity of endogenous antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase).

Cellular protection and anti-premature aging

The natural antioxidants in concentrated garlic protect the integrity of cellular DNA from oxidative modifications. Regular garlic consumption is epidemiologically associated with low rates of systemic oxidative stress and slower cellular aging.

Reduction of systemic inflammation

The organosulfur compounds in garlic inhibit pro-inflammatory enzymes (COX-2, LOX) and reduce the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, TNF-α), contributing to the reduction of low-grade chronic inflammation — one of the common factors of the majority of modern chronic conditions.

Liver, metabolism and detoxification

Maintaining healthy liver function

Garlic helps maintain healthy liver function. The organosulfur compounds activate phase II hepatic detoxification enzymes (glutathione S-transferase), supporting the elimination of toxins and heavy metals from the body through the liver.

Blood sugar balance and supporting metabolism

The compounds in garlic oil can improve insulin sensitivity and inhibit enzymes involved in intestinal glucose absorption. Additionally, allicin stimulates thermogenesis and basal metabolism, contributing to more efficient energy metabolism.

Respiratory system, stress and general health

Maintaining healthy respiratory system function

Garlic helps maintain healthy respiratory system function through its antimicrobial and natural expectorant properties. The compounds in garlic oil can inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi in the respiratory tract and reduce mucosal inflammation, contributing to free and healthy breathing.

Neurological protection

The bioactive compounds in garlic can cross the blood-brain barrier, exerting direct neuroprotective effects. Preliminary studies associate regular garlic extract consumption with a reduced risk of neurodegenerative conditions and with the maintenance of long-term cognitive function.

Bone and joint health

The organosulfur compounds in garlic inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokines involved in the degradation of articular cartilage, contributing to the reduction of joint pain and stiffness.

Resistance to temporary stress

Garlic contributes to resistance to temporary stress. The organosulfur compounds modulate the stress response of the nervous system, reducing cortisol levels and supporting neuroendocrine balance during periods of increased demand — physical or psychological.

Active ingredients

Essential oil from garlic bulbs — Allium sativum

The essential oil from garlic bulbs is the most concentrated and most bioavailable form of the active compounds from Allium sativum. The extraction process through steam distillation concentrates the volatile organosulfur compounds — in particular allicin, diallyl disulfides (DADS), diallyl trisulfides (DATS) and ajoene — which are responsible for the vast majority of the therapeutic effects of garlic. The essential oil contains significantly more active compounds compared to raw garlic, garlic powder or aqueous extract.

Frequently asked questions

Does the soft capsule completely eliminate the garlic smell?

Not completely, but to a great extent. The softgel soft capsule is designed to dissolve in the intestine, not in the stomach, releasing the essential oil directly into the small intestine. This eliminates or significantly reduces the garlic smell on the breath — the main problem with classic raw garlic consumption or non-encapsulated supplements. Some individuals may notice a slight smell after administration, especially at high doses and over a longer period of time, but this is much more discreet compared to raw garlic or garlic powder.

What is allicin and why is it so important?

Allicin is the main bioactive compound in garlic, produced through the action of the enzyme alliinase on alliin when garlic is crushed or cut. It is responsible for the characteristic smell and for the vast majority of the therapeutic effects: antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, cardiovascular and antioxidant. Allicin is unstable and rapidly transforms into organosulfur compounds (DADS, DATS, ajoene) — all of them therapeutic. The essential oil from garlic concentrates these compounds in their most potent form.

Can it be taken if I am undergoing treatment with anticoagulants?

Nu fără consultul medicului. Usturoiul are proprietăți antiplachetare și poate potența efectul anticoagulantelor. Dacă urmați astfel de tratamente, este obligatorie consultarea medicului înainte de a începe administrarea. De asemenea, dacă este programată o intervenție chirurgicală, discutați cu medicul despre oportunitatea întreruperii.

Can it truly help with cholesterol?

Yes — garlic is one of the most studied natural ingredients for cardiovascular health. Studies have demonstrated that garlic extract reduces LDL cholesterol, reduces triglycerides and improves the HDL/LDL ratio. The mechanisms are multiple: inhibition of HMG-CoA reductase, reduction of intestinal cholesterol absorption and increased biliary excretion of bile acids.

Why is it consumed during meals and not before or after?

Garlic essential oil is a concentrated oily compound that can cause gastric irritation if administered on an empty stomach. Consumption during meals protects the gastric mucosa, reduces any possible digestive discomfort and improves the absorption of fat-soluble compounds from the oil, as the dietary lipids from the meal facilitate the absorption of organosulfur compounds at the intestinal level.

Why essential oil and not garlic powder or even raw garlic?

The essential oil concentrates the volatile organosulfur compounds — the most therapeutically active ones — at a greater density compared to garlic powder. Encapsulation in softgel protects the compounds from oxidation and ensures their release in the intestine, enhancing bioavailability and largely eliminating the unpleasant smell. Regarding raw garlic, to obtain the therapeutic equivalent of a daily supplement dose, you would need to consume large amounts of raw garlic daily — with the side effects of smell, gastric irritation and intense taste.

How long should it be administered to observe effects?

The effects are cumulative. Some may manifest quickly, even after 2-3 weeks of use, while others require more time. We recommend courses of 3 months, repeated 2–3 times per year, with a break of a few weeks between courses.

Why is it stored at a maximum of 18°C?

Garlic essential oil and the active organosulfur compounds (including allicin and its derivatives) are sensitive to heat — high temperatures accelerate their oxidation and degradation, reducing the potency of the supplement. Softgel soft capsules are also sensitive to heat, and can become soft, sticky or damaged at high temperatures. Storage at a maximum of 18°C ensures optimal stability of the active compounds and integrity of the capsules throughout the product's shelf life.
